About Rosetta
The concept for Rosetta© was born as a result of my work on many system migrations through corporate mergers and/or system upgrades over the last 30 years. Most of the migration work involved legacy systems that have been in use for decades and as a result didn't have any Data Dictionaries and/or regularly maintained documentation.
One of the biggest issues with migrating data from older systems is the lack of documentation and available expertise on these systems. A data migration project always requires a lot of analysis and code deconstruction in order to understand the exact nature of the existing data and how it can be loaded into a new system. If you don't get this right, delays and rebuilds of the Data Migration process are inevitable and will end up with project cost blow-outs.
Rosetta© uses a relational database to hold details of all systems that are involved in a migration. The structure of the storage repositories of each system are initially loaded into Rosetta© and then used as a basis for Data Mapping and documenting. As analysis is progressing during the project, results are stored within the Rosetta© repository.
Users of Rosetta© have 5 different layers of data access authority. This allows for stricter control over documenting and signing off of rules for data conversion.
Each change to data within Rosetta© is timestamped and logged with the identity of the person that made the update. Different user profiles have different levels of access according to the group to which they belong. The available groups include:
- System Administrator
- Architect
- Analyst
- Verifier
- Developer
Using Rosetta© in a collaborative setting also reduces, if not removes the possibility of important notes being lost in email chains or versions of Data Mapping spreadsheets being accidentally overwritten.
Keeping track of the progress of Data Mapping is done dynamically by Rosetta© and displayed on the Dashboard. It also builds Data Dictionaries for the Systems that are involved in the migration, while they are undergoing analysis.
Rosetta© is an essential, intuitive, collaborative documentation utility that reduces the time and material costs associated with analysis work that is fundamental for any Data Migration project to be successfully performed on time and within budget.
